#2 - New York actor Alexis Smith won second prize; she'll join the cast and crew of The 24 Hour Musicals backstage for the meet-and-greet as the 24 hours begin, and she's invited to attend the performance with a guest. Watch her entry below.
"What a wonderful, hilarious, and Cretaceous opportunity! Feeling t-rextremely proud to be chosen as a finalist (ok enough Dino puns). Major props to April Louise and Joel! Can't wait for the show!" commented Alexis.
Two days after Alexis graduated with a Masters in Opera Performance from Brooklyn College Conservatory, she had a major change of heart, deciding to pursue musical theater rather than opera. That decision has led to a series of cabaret nights around NYC, singing back-up for multiple banks, as well as a reading in 2014 in which she portrayed Danny in "Redrum: The Unauthorized Musical Parody of the Shining" alongside Alice Ripley and Marc Kudisch. #3 - Joel "Junior" Vasquez from Los Angeles, in third place, is invited to attend the performance with a guest. His entry is below.
A close runnner-up was Joe Andre. "This talented young man from Long Island has gone undiscovered for too long," says Sperling. "After performing in numerous local theater productions and singing at bars across the Island, Joe is ready to break into the world of Broadway. I can't wait to see him on stage." Additionally, the contest was kicked off by Amy Oestreicher, with this amazing story: "I love the idea of 24 Hour Musicals... I was a musical theatre geek since birth. Randomly at 18 I developed a blood clot - after both lungs collapsed, my stomach exploded to the top of the OR and I almost died. 6 months in a coma, over 3 years without food or drink. After 27 surgeries I was miraculously reconstructed with whatever intestines I had left, and now I'm eating and happy! Over those years, I never wanted to feel like a patient or victim - I relied on my creativity to get through. I starred in musicals, wrote a graphic novel, taught nursery school, put up 3 professional art shows, learned karate, launched a chocolate business, a food blog, and never let myself give up hope. Arts were my way of connecting with the world, sharing my story and spreading my message of hope. In '12, I compiled hundreds of journal pages I had scribbled in, original & established songs, and made a solo show of my story. I wrote, directed,& starred in my 1-woman musical "Gutless & Grateful: A Musical Feast", and the biggest gift of all was how it affected so many theatregoers. People I'd never met before hugged in tears, telling me how I helped them with a hardships in their life, or just for reminding them of everyday blessings. With humor, passion & faith you can get through anything & thrive." View her video.
Co-director Elisabeth Sperling concludes, "We hope this contest will help all the contestants on their paths to many great performances."
