This week, as a supplement to Broadway World's upcoming exclusive interview with mega-star comedienne, actress, producer, talk show host, humanitarian and Broadway star Rosie O'Donnell we are taking a look at some of the best clips from her self-titled television show featuring the brightest stars and best shows - flops and famous - to grace her great studio soundstage. THE Rosie O'Donnell SHOW was best-known for it's stunning Broadway-related performances and the clips herein - including appearances by Kristin Chenoweth, Patti LuPone, Audra McDonald and more - are proof positive of the top-tier talent her appealing and engaging talk show attracted for the better part of a decade for audiences of all ages. Also, we have a taste of TABOO and a few special surprises as well! From hosting the Tony Awards to toasting Broadway's best, no one has done more for the popularization of the Broadway name in the late-late-twentieth and early-twenty-first century more than Queen of Nice and founder of Rosie's Theater Kids (formerly Rosie's Broadway Kids), Rosie O.
Talk Amongst Yourselves
Considering she is the most Emmy-winning woman in television history and the host of one of the most notable and beloved talk shows of the 1990s and 00s, Rosie O'Donnell has contributed more to the preservation of Broadway shows through performances on that show than anyone else in entertainment. These clips are proof of that.
We start with two of Rosie's personal favorite clips from her show, both featuring legendary leading lady Patti LuPone.
First up, check out this totally loveable performance of "An Old Fashioned Wedding" with Peter Gallagher on the classic Irving Berlin counterpoint duet from ANNIE GET YOUR GUN.
Next, we have one of the most thrilling duets in music history, originally having been recorded by Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand, the simply incredible "Get Happy/Happy Days Are Here Again".
Here we have a thrilling montage from when Rosie hosted the Tony Awards in 1998. Check out three Broadway divas at their best singing their signature songs as only they know how - Patti LuPone with "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" from EVITA, Jennifer Holliday with "And I Am Telling You" from DREAMGIRLS and Betty Buckley with "Memory" from CATS. A triptych of triple-threats!
Lastly, we have some specially selected clips from a few of the lesser-known shows that Rosie featured on her show during its seven year run. No one else has had performances of this quality with this regularity on television before or since Rosie O'Donnell so her new OWN-centric show - which she herself told me today will feature lots of Broadway shows and Broadway performers - shall undoubtedly continue on that rich tradition. It can't come soon enough! These clips should help tide us over until the new OWN show's premiere in 2011!
Ch-ch-check out the lusty and raucous ladies of THE LIFE.
Here is the world premiere performance of the Actor's Fund cast of DREAMGIRLS - Lillias White, Audra McDonald and Heather Headley.
One of Rosie's personal favorite moments from her eponymous show, here is Kristin Chenoweth's first television appearance, singing the adorable and appealing "Taylor The Latte Boy". Tonys, Golden Globes, Emmys, GLEE and more were just on the horizon at this point! Rosie can always sniff out the brightest and biggest talent on Broadway, see why and how and who here.
As one final treat, here is perhaps Rosie's best interview to date. One word surely says it all (and always will): BARBRA.
That's all for this week. Please remember that if you have discovered a particularly thrilling, unique, bizarre or hilarious Broadway-related clip to please send us a line at the link below. Until next week...
