Grammy, Oscar and Emmy award winning singer-songwriter Randy Newman has penned scores for films ranging from The Natural to Monsters Inc. This summer, Encores! Off-Center will present a rare opportunity to catch the man himself playing the devil in his darkly hilarious modern-day take on the Faust story. BroadwayWorld has confirmed that Newman's Faust is set to be featured in the 2014 Off-Center season for one night only on July 1. Additional casting has not yet been announced.

Randy Newman's Faust is a 1993 musical by American musician and songwriter Randy Newman, who based the work on the classic story of Faust, borrowing elements from the version by Goethe, as well as Milton's Paradise Lost, but updating the story to the modern day, and infusing it with humorous cynicism. In this retelling, God and the Devil fight for the soul of Henry Faust, a student at the University of Notre Dame. The musical was performed at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego and the Goodman Theatre in Chicago, as well as released as a CD. The album cast features Randy Newman, James Taylor, Don Henley, Elton John, Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt.
City Center's Encores! Off-Center, featuring three seminal Off-Broadway musicals filtered through the lens of today's most innovative artists, will return for its second season this summer (full schedule to be announced).
In the Encores! tradition, there is a great emphasis on the scores, with the orchestra performing onstage, and each show receives a brief rehearsal period followed by five performances. The series also features free, pre-curtain conversations with a range of special guests including artists, scholars and musicians. These events, while informative, are also entertaining in their own right, featuring genres ranging from visual art to spoken-word poetry and beyond. The events place the musical in the context of its legacy and provide insightful explorations of the work the audience is about to experience. www.NYCityCenter.org
