Despite the fluctuating economy, the U.S. beauty industry is predictable in yearly growth: It's projected to generate $42 billion in sales this year and is expected to grow at a rate of more than 5 percent annually, according to market research company IBISWorld.

Recently, observers have seen a shift in beauty consumers' buying patterns. Eyebrow threading, a low-pain and precise method of shaping eyebrows, is catching on in a huge way after nearly 25 years as a relative outlier.

"Eyebrow threading is so appealing because customers are in search of beauty services that are fast, painless and give them the results they desire without fuss," said Sumita Batra, CEO of Ziba Beauty, a California-based eyebrow threading franchise. "Eyebrow threading is fast replacing waxing as the preferred method for brow shaping and our franchises are reaping the benefits."

Ziba Beauty created the demand for eyebrow threading when it brought the Far East beauty tradition to the United States 24 years ago.

Trained threading artists use cotton thread to pick up strands of facial hair and remove them quickly and with very little pain. The method allows artists to shape eyebrows more precisely, quickly and comfortably than they would by tweezing or waxing. The gentler action, which removes the hair from the follicle, leads to fewer wrinkles and less skin irritation.

Ziba Beauty attracted celebrity customers such as Madonna, Liv Tyler, Gwen Stefani and Naomi Campbell who were seen with Ziba Beauty mehndi designs in the late 1990s. The ornate henna tattoos brought in customers who embraced Ziba Beauty's other service, eyebrow threading. Facial hair removal is a significant segment of the beauty industry, and Ziba Beauty, as the leading practitioner, threads over 1 million eyebrows a year.

Ziba Beauty is expanding, targeting locations throughout the U.S., the United Kingdom and Canada.

"There's no question that threading is one of the top beauty trends in the nation," Batra said. "We're happy to meet the demand through franchising and giving clients services they can trust."

Ziba Beauty's store revenues average $840,000 per location and total investment starts at $249,000, making it an attractive franchise to research.
