Writing a Broadway show doesn't happen overnight. In the case of The Great Gatsby, it took years to create the musical's book and score, as writers Kait Kerrigan (book) and Nathan Tysen (lyrics), along with their collaborator Jason Howland (music), can attest.

Their collaboration began as a project for the show's lead producer Chunsoo Shin, who tasked them to write the musical for a Korean audience. "Because the initial assignment was to write [the musical] for Korea, automatically we were approaching the adaptation to feel universal," explained Tysen. "Because of that, I think it is! It's hitting and connecting to a lot of people that aren't just Americans. That has been very rewarding. We have the best fans on Broadway."

"Being able to be a part of a show like this- that has the energy, the machine and title, but also this bespoke fandom and this relationship with its fans is the most perfect fit for me," added Kerrigan. "I feel so grateful every day."

BroadwayWorld is taking you backstage at The Great Gatsby with a four-part video series spotlighting its incredible creators. Watch in this video as Kerrigan and Tysen tell us more about how they came to create the musical's iconic sound.
