Carnegie Hall today announced that conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen will conduct all three scheduled concerts next season by The MET Orchestra in May and June 2017. Mr. Salonen steps in for James Levine, whose withdrawal from these programs was announced last week by the Metropolitan Opera and Carnegie Hall.

The first concert in the series on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 remains unchanged and features an all-Mahler program with mezzo-soprano Susan Graham and tenor Matthew Polenzani singing selections from Des Knaben Wunderhorn, alongside a performance of the composer's Symphony No. 1. The Saturday, June 3, 2017 concert includes guest soloist Maurizio Pollini in Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1 in D Minor, as well as Schumann's Symphony No. 3 in E-flat Major, Op. 97, "Rhenish," (which replaces the previously announced Brahms Piano Quartet No. 1 in G Minor as orchestrated by Schoenberg, on the program). The Tuesday, June 6, 2017 all-Sibelius program features guest soloist Christian Tetzlaff in the Violin Concerto, as well as Symphonies Nos. 6 and 7 (replacing the previously announced Sibelius works Symphony No. 4, Valse triste, and Finlandia).

Esa-Pekka Salonen is currently conducting the Met's acclaimed new production of Strauss's Elektra. He is the Principal Conductor of London's Philharmonia Orchestra and Conductor Laureate of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, where he served as Music Director for 17 years. This season, he is also composer-in-residence at the New York Philharmonic. He made his Met debut in 2009 leading the company premiere of Janá?ek's From the House of the Dead. Mr. Salonen last conducted in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage in 1998.
