Country Dance*New York (CD*NY) will present ManHATan Mania, a fun and festive English country dance ball for all, on Friday, May 4, 2018 from 7:30 pm to 10:30 pm at the Good Shepherd-Faith Presbyterian Church, 152 West 66th Street, New York, NY. This dress-up English ball will be led by the witty and highly regarded caller, Tom Amesse, with lively live music performed by the superb Trio Picante: Kate Barnes (piano, guitar), Daniel Beerbohm (clarinet, flute, whistle), and Mary Lea (violin, viola).
It is not necessary to come with a partner or to learn the dances in advance. All dances will be taught. The ManHATan Mania ball is sponsored, in part, by an endowment from the estate of Wayne Batcheler who loved hats. In his memory, attendees are asked to bring a hat to wear.
Admission: $15 general public, $12 for full-time students with ID or CDNY members
English country dancing is choreographed community dancing, with repertoire ranging from court dances of the 1600s and 1700s to dances composed in the 20th and 21st centuries. English country dance is a participatory art form, welcoming to novices and experienced dancers alike. At the start of each dance, dancers invite one another to be partners. After centuries of development, it is extremely diverse and can vary from elegant to energetic, from playful to solemn, and from stately to boisterous.
