While two-time Academy Award-winning stage and screen star Emma Thompson can count yet another award nomination on her resume today thanks to her Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for her starring role in SAVING MR. BANKS, the versatile actress generously gave a preview of her eagerly awaited upcoming turn as one of the iconic cannibalistic leads of the Stephen Sondheim musical masterpiece SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET in an interview appearance today.
Appearing on LIVE! WITH KELLY & MICHAEL, Thompson was prompted by the genial hosts to give a tease of her forthcoming live performance of the musical thriller with the NY Philharmonic coming up later this year and proceeded to do so with singing a few lines - and then gave us even more!
In commenting on the role originated by Angela Lansbury, Thompson related, "I'm so frightened! I'm so frightened."
Furthermore, Thompson added of the character herself, "She's a really mad, mad woman - she cooks people and puts them into pies!"
As for the upcoming event itself, Thompson says, "There's going to be an orchestra onstage - so, it's like in amongst the orchestra. I mean, what a treat - but, scary."
Scary, indeed - particularly given the gruesome source material!
