Elizabeth Copeland Arts and Crafts Silver Chalice Featured at Kaminskis'

Kaminski Auctions' June 18th estate auction features an important Arts and Crafts silver and enamel chalice handcrafted by the renowned Boston artist Elizabeth Copeland.

The chalice cup is typical of her work. Styled as a religious chalice cup it is encrusted with rich colored, semiprecious gemstones and the bowl of the cup is lined in translucent mother of pearl. It measures six inches high by five and three quarters in diameter and has a spout. The cup is signed with the artists initials "EC" on the base and has a red label inscribed "No 7 loaned by Dr. Bigelow from E. Copeland, Boston."

Born in Revere, Massachusetts Elizabeth Copeland was one of New England's most prominent artists of the Arts and Crafts period. She studied at the Cowles Art School in Boston. Her work was most influenced by a metalsmithing professor named Laurin Hovey Martin, who went on to teach at the Massachusetts College of Art. Concentrating in enamel on metal at Cowles, Copeland went on to establish herself as one of the premier "enamellists" of the period.

A prominent Boston Brahmin named Sarah Choate Sears (1858?-?1935), herself a serious collector, became interested in her work and sponsored Copeland to travel and study in Europe in 1908.
Copeland's work includes silver enameled repoussé boxes and most pieces are religious in subject. Her work can be found in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts and museum collections across the United States.

Other decorative art highlights in the auction include an eclectic mix of European bronzes including a 19th century Italian bronze of Napoleon and others by Cheret, Mene, Peinte, Anfrie, and the Russian sculptor Lieberich.

Fine art highlights include a painting of local cottages by the South African artist Gregoire Boonzaier, works by the French artists Henri Seigle and Alfred Boucher, and an oil on board of fisherman by the Norwegian artist Frits Thaulow. There is an abstract ink on paper work by Alexander Calder as well.

An important silver entry is a sterling silver presentation tennis trophy from the Fiske Warren family of Boston. A portrait of Mrs. Fiske Warren (Gretchen Osgood) and her daughter Rachael, painted by John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts.
