Elektra Kurtis brings her "Rituals for Peace" to NYC's Symphony Space and Cornelia Street Cafe.
In September 2017, violinist/composer Elektra Kurtis joins her Ensemble Elektra (Curtis Stewart, Bradley Jones, Reggie Nicholson, Lefteris Bournias) to bring their Rituals for Peace concert series to New York City, for performances that showcase the violinist's unique blending of musical and cultural styles.
Kurtis, whose music is described as "profound yearning, ecstatic wailing and an aching beauty" (All About Jazz), brings a sonic language that reflects her Greek origins, musical upbringing in Poland, and further studies in Finland.
Rituals for Peace will be performed at NYC's Cornelia Street Cafe on September 5, and at Symphony Space on September 19. The concert series, which culminates at the Symphony Space event, explores the intersections of classical and jazz traditions, equally drawing from music of Polish, Greek and Arabic origins.
The events will feature world premiere performances of Kurtis' works Wholetone Games and Hera. In addition to building bridges through music, the performers will invite audience members to participate in live communal "rituals for peace."
"I named this concert series Rituals for Peace to express the mission of my music to build bridges and communication. I believe that live music events are rituals by nature, that integrate humanity through expression. They are connecting the performers and audience members by encouraging participation and communication in musical form." - Elektra Kurtis
