While it's certainly not unusual to see theatre and New York based actors on television, their presence has generally been limited by the fact that many TV series film in Los Angeles.
This year a tax incentive has drawn many TV shows to film in New York, allowing those actors who are based in New York to be considered for guest roles - and starring roles - without relocating or being forced to choose between theatre and television.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, those shows set to film in New York are: Smash (NBC), Pan Am (ABC), Rookies (CBS), Person of Interest (CBS), Unforgettable (CBS), A Gifted Man (CBS), I Just Want My Pants Back (MTV) and Girls (HBO).
Among the actors already signed up for these series are many actors who have made their main mark on the stage. As Kaufman Astora Studios president Hal Rosenbluth told THR, though, this is not only good news for the actors who are based in New York but also for the state itself: "We have seen a record number of productions come to New York," he says, and this leads to the creation of "more jobs, expanding facilities and equipment and ultimately generating revenue for New York."
The Governor's Office for Motion Picture & Television Development estimates that the 30 percent production tax credit will create thousands of jobs and generate $10.5 billion in direct spending in New York State through 2014.
