On January 16th, the Duplex Cabaret Theatre's (61 Christopher Street) series Monday Nights, New Voices will celebrate its first anniversary in a 7 PM concert.
Monday Nights, New Voices
puts lesser-known Broadway talents in the spotlight. "In addition to
classic musical theatre tunes, the series features new music
from up-and-coming and established composers, who will accompany the
performers on piano," according to press notes.
Hosted by producer Scott Alan (also the writer of the musical Piece), Becca Ayers, Barrett Foa and Daniel Torres, the concert will feature performances by Amy Barker, Todd Buonopane, Natatlie Joy Johnson, Peter Previti, and Matthew Tweardy. On-the-rise songwriters such as Eli Bolin, Barbara Anselmi, Neil Bartram and Alan will accompany the performers. Anselmi will also provide musical direction for the evening.
In addition, a new series called Fridays at the 'Plex will supplement Monday Nights, New Voices. Fridays at the 'Plex launched in July of 2005 and will continue this year. "The idea is a simple one: monthly performances from some of cabaret's most dynamic performers." For the next few months, the first Friday will belong to John Wallowitch (2/3, 3/3, 4/7, 5/5, 6/2), the second to Suzanne Fiore (2/10, 3/10, 4/14, 5/12, 6/9), the third to Todd Almond (2/17, 3/17, 4/21, 5/19, 6/16) and the fourth to Steven Lutvak (3/31, 4/28, 5/26, 6/30).
There is a
$10 cover charge and a two-drink minimum for the anniversary concert. For Friday's at the 'Plex, there is a $20 cover charge for performances by Wallowitch and Lutvak, and a $12 cover for performances by Fiore and Almond. Call (212) 255-5438 for
