Dreamgirls, Mirren, Streep, Etc. Earn 'Globes' Nominations

This morning, the nominations for the 2007 Golden Globe Awards were announced.

The Golden Globes ceremony will take place in Beverly Hills on January 15th, 2007.  They will air live on NBC at 8 PM.

The movie musical Dreamgirls, based on the Broadway hit, received a nomination for Best Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical.  Beyonce Knowles earned a nod as Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical.  She is joined in that category by Annette Bening for Running with Scissors, Toni Collette for Little Miss Sunshine, Meryl Streep for The Devil Wears Prada and Renee Zellweger for Miss Potter.  Jennifer Hudson was nominated for Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for Dreamgirls, as was Cate Blanchett, for Notes on a Scandal.  Eddie Murphy also received a nod for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture for his work in the movie musical.

In addition, Dreamgirls' "Listen" was nominated as Best Original Song - Motion Picture.  The song features music and lyrics by Henry Krieger, Anne Preven, Scott Cutler and Beyonce Knowles.

Theatre veterans Judi Dench and Helen Mirren were nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Drama for their respective performances in Notes on a Scandal and The Queen, while Peter O'Toole was recognized in the category of Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama for his work in Venus.

Two actors who will appear in the upcoming Sweeney Todd film were also nominated.  Sacha Baron Cohen earned a nod as Best Actor in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical for Borat, while Johnny Depp was honored in the same category for his work in Pirates of the Carribean: Dead Man's Chest.

Playwrights Peter Morgan, with The Queen, and Patrick Marber, with Notes on a Scandal, were nominated for Best Screenplay - Motion Picture.

A number of theatre veterans were nominated for their TV work.  They include: Edie Falco ("The Sopranos"), Michael C. Hall ("Dexter"), Felicity Huffman ("Desperate Housewives"), Mary-Louise Parker ("Weeds"), Alec Baldwin ("30 Rock"), Tony Shalhoub ("Monk"), Bening ("Mrs. Harris"), Gillian Anderson ("Bleak House"), Mirren (for both "Elizabeth I" and "Prime Suspect: The Final Act"), Ben Kingsley ("Mrs. Harris"), Bill Nighy ("Gideon's Daughter"), Sarah Paulson ("Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip"), Collette ("Tsunami, The Aftermath"), and Jeremy Irons ("Elizabeth I").
