The Dramatists Guild Fund (DGF) is providing more than $40,000 in emergency recovery grants to theaters affected by Superstorm Sandy. Theaters in downtown Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and New Jersey will receive grants to help them rebuild and move on with their seasons.

Due to the storm, many theaters lost power or suffered from structural damage and flooding. "As we provide funding to non-profit theaters annually, we know how fragile finances can be in the arts, especially for smaller organizations," said DGF Executive Director Rachel Routh. "We hope this can be one step towards a faster recovery within the theater community."

DGF is no stranger to helping in emergency situations. Its Kesselring EmergenCy Grant program provides funds to writers in need of temporary financial assistance due to unexpected illness or extreme hardship. In March of 2012, the Fund also joined a consortium of theater organizations for SHINSAI: Theaters for Japan, an event that raised approximately $30,000 in support of theaters and writers who suffered from the 2011 earthquake in Japan. When disaster hit home, DGF knew it needed to help.

The current round of emergenCy Grants is being contributed to area theaters who have previously received support from DGF's annual theater granting program. Each year the Dramatists Guild Fund provides $150,000 in grants to nonprofit theaters and theatrical institutions across the country that develop and/or produce contemporary American plays and musicals. Theaters receiving emergenCy Grants include:

DGF is one of many arts organizations offering assistance, and the Fund's Board President, Gretchen Cryer, feels that community support is vital. "I applaud the amazing efforts seen throughout the arts community. It's times of great need like this, that remind us why we need to pull together and support one another," said Cryer.
