Dixon Place presents the World Premiere of ECLIPSIS FLAMENCO: ENCOUNTER OF TWO WORLDS, a dance piece choerographed and directed by Maria Elena Anaya, produced and directed by Nora Jacobs, and REFLECTION OF IDENTITY, a gallery production.

ECLIPSIS FLAMENCO

An original, intensely passionate dance theatrical piece, Eclipsis Flamenco: Encounter of Two Worlds, documents the historical merging of the Pre-Colombian and Spanish cultures that birthed "mestizaje," (mixed cultures) the very foundation of Mexican life.

Under the artistic direction of the Mexican Flamenco star, Maria Elena Anaya, Eclipsis Flamenco becomes an exuberant celebration. The plasticity, strength, rhythm and eroticism that emerge from the interaction of pre-Hispanic dance and Mexican folklore reverberate in the profound chords of the guitar, percussion and "cante flamenco." The all-professional company's dancers, singers, and musicians trace the development of the dynamic cultural fusion of these two worlds revealing a vision of life full of pride, passion, honor, love, and sorrow.

The show runs from tonight, September 13 - 28 at 7:30 PM. Tickets can be purchased for $16 in advance here, $20 at the door, and $12 for students and seniors.

REFLECTION OF IDENTITY

Join in the gallery as Curator Yulia Tikhonova presents Sol Aramendi, Sean Paul Gallegos, Omar Gamez, Thelma Garcia, Gabriela Leon, Lucia Ocegura, Sofia Garfias & Mary Valverde, whose personal and collective identities are situated in a rich confluence of Spanish, Mexican, pre-Columbian and Native American cultures. Their artwork engages these unique identities and becomes a window into contemporary North American culture while interrogating their native cultures and offering a critical view on the traps and deceptions of mainstream American culture. With the wisdom of outsiders they pose difficult the questions on politics, socio-economic status, cultural assimilation that are often swept under the rug by the native born.

Admission is free, and the public is invited to a free opening reception tonight, September 13 from 5:30 - 7:30 PM. The gallery is open until October 3rd.

The public is reminded that The Cocktail Lounge is open before, during and after the shows, and are invited to come by after 6 PM for a pre-show cocktail.
