Discovery Times Square has announced the April 26th opening of Dr. Gunther von Hagens' BODY WORLDS: PULSE. The exhibit is the newest in the renowned BODY WORLDS series, which has presented the human body in groundbreaking ways for discovery to more than 36 million people around the world during its 18 year tenure, always using only responsibly sourced bodies to do so. Developed over the past year exclusively and specifically with the Big Apple in mind, PULSE mirrors the fast-paced lifestyles of New Yorkers and others nationwide.
In its visually compelling, entertaining, informative and interactive presentation, PULSE is able to - almost literally - bring to life the findings from scientific studies on the parallels between 21st century lifestyle and the body. Beyond the obvious questions of nutrition and exercise, BODY WORLDS: PULSE explores issues of the pace of one's life, natural tempo and optimal rhythms for healthy living. Exhibit attendees will have a front row seat to view historic and breathtaking visuals, and the unique opportunity to take a peek inside their own bodies. Never before has such a realistic portrait of ourselves and the effects of our lifestyles been offered.
All of this is made possible by a process called Plastination, which halts decomposition of the body by replacing natural bodily fluids with reactive plastics that are initially pliable, and then harden after infusion, rendering the specimens permanently preserved in life-like form. Plastination illustrates how our bodies internally respond to everyday movements, allowing for unprecedented ways of studying the human form. Dr. Gunther von Hagens is the original pioneering anatomist and inventor of Plastination. His wife, Dr. Angelina Whalley, who is also the Director of the Institute for Plastination and the conceptual planner of the exhibition, says "BODY WORLDS: PULSE shows the form and function of the human body, its vulnerability and potential, and the challenges it faces navigating the 21st century."
Of course without bodies to study and display, there would be no exhibit. The specimens displayed in all BODY WORLDS exhibits are secured exclusively through the Institute for Plastination's body donation program. To date there are over 13,000 registered donors who have generously volunteered their bodies for scientific advancement and study.
James Sanna, President of Discovery Times Square says, "Gunther von Hagens' BODY WORLDS: PULSE is the definitive work of its kind. It is a transformative experience that illuminates The Miracles of the human body that we take for granted every day. This exhibition literally confronts us with how the body absorbs and reacts to the dizzying range of stimuli humans are exposed to in the 21st century. We are thrilled to host this exciting exhibit and finally bring BODY WORLDS to New York City for the first time."
