Director Matthew Warchus Leaves SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE West End Stage Adaptation

According to the Daily Mail, director Matthew Warchus has left the in-the-works West End adaptation of the Oscar-winning film Shakespeare in Love. The production now begins the search for a new director.

Warchus, known for his work on Art, Boeing-Boeing, God of Carnage and now Matilda, was in attendance at a recent script workshop. As reported by Baz Bamigboye, "sharp words were exchanged," which led to him dropping the project.

The film, which won seven Academy Awards (among the winners were stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Judi Dench and writers Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman), has already had a rocky road to the stage. Norman previously withdrew from the project, leaving producers Thomas Schumacher and Sonia Friedman to welcome Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) as its new writer. With the setbacks, the show can hope for a 2013 or perhaps 2014 debut.
