The LA Times has released a first look at the upcoming Footloose film. "People are going to see my performance rather than the glitz," Julianne Hough, playing Ariel, said of the role. "This is hometown-girl hot. I'm definitely wearing some tight jeans in this movie."
It had been reported that the new film Footloose will be expanded into a "full-blown movie musical" from the earlier film with songs. In addition to starring a young Kevin Bacon, Footloose also starred Lori Singer and John Lithgow. It was originally written by Dean Pitchford and directed by Herbert Ross. A Broadway musical version of Footloose was previously staged in 1998.
Opposite Hough is Kenny Wormald, who echoes her excitement: "I was born in 1984, the year Footloose came out," he says. "I was about 10 when I saw it for the first time. I remember thinking, 'That is awesome. He's dancing in a factory. I want to do that.' Cut to 25 years or so later, and I am sitting here in this warehouse."
The film will be produced by the highly successful team of Craig Zadan (a producer of the original "Footloose" in 1984) and Neil Meron. Together, Zadan and Meron produced the blockbuster "Hairspray" and the critically acclaimed "Chicago," which was the first musical in 34 years to win the top honor of Best Picture Oscar at the 2002 Academy Awards. The film will also be produced by Dylan Sellers ("Agent Cody Banks"). Academy Award-nominated Susannah Grant ("Erin Brockovich") wrote the screenplay.
"When you open with that car crash, it is shocking, terrifying and really unsettling," Zadan told USA Today. "Everything Craig has done feels authentic. The first film was a fable. This one is real. When they fight, they really fight. The dancing in the first film was nice. The dancing in this one is fierce."
