Denzel Washington's FENCES Delivers Strong Box Office Showing in Limited Release

Over the weekend, Denzel Washington's big screen adaptation of August Wilson's FENCES took in $128K in its limited opening, according to Deadline. Paramount Pictures previewed Washington's third feature directorial outing in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, averaging $32K in each.

Commented Megan Colligan, President of Worldwide Marketing & Distribution at Paramount of the movie, "This is an event for upscale moviegoers. You may miss the upscale moviegoers if you don't do that, and in this era of social media, it's good to have the wind at your back and get it going that way. I think people in New York and L.A. are going to be blown away."

FENCES will open in over 2,000 theaters nationwide on Christmas Day.

In other theater news, Lionsgate's LA LA LAND continued to perform well as it expanded to additional theaters nationwide. The film grossed over $4 million in 200 theaters. The musically-themed pic, starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, opened last week with the best per theater average of 2016.

About FENCES: Denzel Washington and Viola Davis reprise their roles in a big screen adaptation of August Wilson's 1983 Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winning play FENCES. FENCES is directed by Denzel Washington from a screenplay by August Wilson, adapted from Wilson's Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play. The film stars Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Jovan Adepo, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson, and Saniyya Sydney. The film is produced by Denzel Washington, Todd Black and Scott Rudin.

The 2010 Broadway production of FENCES was produced by Scott Rudin and starred Washington and Davis. The show received Tonys for best revival of a play, best actor in a play (Washington) and best actress in a play (Davis). Stephen McKinley Henderson also received a Tony nomination as best featured actor in a play.
