From a founder of the long running improvisational comedy group 'Shock of The Funny' to musical theatre, opera and performing in a Klezmer band, singer-songwriter, actress, playwright and opera aficionado Deborah Karpel, stages her autobiographical one woman show 'The Midwood Miracle' at the Bruno Walter Auditorium on February 12th and The Puffin Foundation on April 18th.
Collaborating with composer/musical director/pianist Lance Cruce (pianist for Joan Rivers Live!, numerous musicals at La MaMa, Dixon Place) 'The Midwood Miracle' is a hilarious romp through Yiddish Folk songs, improv, opera and anecdotes with a cast of characters we all may be somewhat familiar with having in our own lives. Actress, Director, Penny Rockwell (Classic Stage Company,'Joan Crawford's Children' and 'Loitering with Intent') directs.
The autobiographical work is Deborah as the consummate dying breed of the downtown Manhattan theatre industry; displaying her vast array of talent acting out an array of characters that influenced her acting and musical career while chronicling her love of opera and musical theatre. 'The Midwood Miracle' started as a concert at the National Yiddish Book Center in Amherst, MA and expanded to become a solo show. As interest and attention grew, Deborah performed the show at The Art House in Provincetown, MA, The Puffin Foundation in NJ, The Ellington Room at Manhattan Plaza, and then took the show to Germany for ten performances as part of the Recklinghausen Fringe Festival in Recklinghausen. With new songs, staging and direction, this current incarnation is a tour de force from a long tenured Manhattan theatre veteran.
