Film star Rosario Dawson, who will appear as Mimi in the upcoming screen version of Rent, has been tapped to play Julia in the Shakespeare in the Park's revival of the musical The Two Gentlemen of Verona. The production, a musical adaptation of the Shakespeare comedy, will play the Delacorte Theatre in Central Park for a limited run from August 16th through September 11th.

Dawson joins the previously-announced Norm Lewis (Side Show, A New Brain) as Valentine, David Costabile (Caroline, or Change, Titanic) as Launce, Oscar Isaac (When It's Cocktail Time in Cuba) as Proteus, Paolo Montalban (Pacific Overtures) as Eglamour and Megan Lawrence (Urinetown) as Lucetta.
The Two Gentlemen of Verona, which boasts a book by John Guare and Mel Shapiro, lyrics by Guare and music by Galt MacDermot, will be directed and choreographed by Kathleen Marshall (Wonderful Town, Kiss Me, Kate). This staging, which will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Public Theatre, will "reimagine" rather than reproduce the original Tony-winning 1971 production. As produced by Joseph Papp, the musical transferred the action from Milan and Verona to New York City and Puerto Rico, and starred Raul Julia, Jonelle Allen, Clifton Davis and Jeff Goldblum.

In addition to Rent, Dawson previously sang onscreen as Valerie in Josie and the Pussycats. Her other film credits include Sin City, Alexander, The 25th Hour, Men in Black II, Sidewalks of New York and Light It Up. She made her debut in 1995's Kids.

The Two Gentlemen of Verona
is preceded at the Delacorte by Mark Lamos' staging of As You Like It, which stars Lynn Collins, Richard Thomas and Brian Bedford; the pastoral Shakespeare comedy runs from June 25th to July 17th. Tickets to both As You Like It and The Two Gentlemen of Verona are free, and are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
