Daughters of Troy announces the 2017/18 Apprentice Company. This marks the second education initiative for the company, following the Summer Apprentice Company. As Daughters of Troy workshops material over the fall, the company aims to foster the development of young artists through the Apprentice Company.
Young women in undergraduate actor training programs applied, by invitation only, to the program. They will be coached as theatre makers, both as actor/writers and the business of running a company. Apprentices selected will each be paired with a mentor, all with teaching experience and Masters of Fine Arts degrees or equivalent career experience. This year's Apprentices are: Courtney Silber, Jordan Tyson, Mariana King, Liz Mattera, Nicole Morales, and Kiara Mendez.
"The week I spent with Daughters of Troy doing The Persephone Project this past summer was one of the best weeks of my life. I'm so grateful to be collaborating again with these incredible women who inspire, teach, and challenge me." said Apprentice Liz Mattera. Brooke M. Haney, Artistic Producer and Director of the Apprentice Training Program, added "this program has become a personal passion of mine. It was incredible witnessing the artistic growth of our first Apprentice Company over the summer, and I'm so excited to continue cultivating young women this year, as they develop their individual voices and grow as theatre makers."
Daughters of Troy is a female-focused company of theatre and visual artists led by Aubrey Saverino and Brooke M. Haney in partnership with international art organization RE:ARTISTE. We use classical text, visual art, music, dance, poetry and storytelling to create theatrical installations inspired by archetypes in mythology and folklore. We believe that the collision of art and theatre can illuminate these ancient stories in unique and exciting ways that reflect our current society, and foster discourse and connection in our communities. Since its official inception in 2016, Daughters of Troy has been granted two artist residencies on Governors Island through Barton Booth's Make Room Initiative, developed seven short plays-- several of which were presented at Dixon Place in November 2016, and worked with over two dozen visual and performing artists from all over the world.
