A drag queen standing up for herself on the subway, a black cop making sense of his chosen profession, and a black republican reeling at the election of Barack Obama are just a few of the characters brought to life in Darian Dauchan's new play Black Sheep. This solo show re-imagines the black experience through a host of characters as they battle the community they supposedly come from while fighting their own isolation in search of an identity that lives outside the box of tribalism.
While giving voice to the voiceless among the voiceless and expanding our perception of what we perceive as the black experience, Black Sheep invites the audience to expand their perception by glimpsing into the lives of the minorities amongst the minorities.
Black Sheep is presented as a reading in All For One's new Works-In-Progress Series. All For One is proud to be supporting awarding-winning solo performer, actor, and poet Darian Dauchan in this theatrical exploration on those "who despite their skin don't fit in with their own kin." Dauchan is the 2012 winner of The Jerome Foundation's Stakeholder's Choice Award and one of his most recent shows Death Boogie, A Hip Hop Poetry Musical was the 2012 winner of two Edinburgh Fringe Festival Musical Theatre Matters Awards. The reading will be directed by Nicole A. Watson (born bad, Milk Like Sugar, 2013 Drama League Fellow) and presented free of charge at the TheaterLab Gallery. A talkback with the artists will follow the reading.
All For One's Works-In-Progress Series provides an outlet for solo shows in progress to receive outside help in their development. The Works-In-Progress series is a vital component of All For One's non-profit mission to develop and support the art and craft of solo theater through education, performance, community, and advocacy.
The reading of Black Sheep will be Tuesday September 30th at 7:00pm at TheaterLab Gallery at 357 West 36th St (between 8th and 9th avenues) on the 3rd floor. Admission is free, a $10 suggested donation will be accepted at the door. Space is limited, so reservations are strongly recommended.
