After a sold-out run at the 2006 New York International Fringe Festival, Danny Boy, winner of the 2006 Fringe Festival Theatermania Audience Favorite Award, will return for five more performances as part of the FringeNYC Encore Series. The comedy, written by Marc Goldsmith and directed by Christopher Goodrich, will play at The Theater at the 14th Street Y Theatre (314 E. 14th Street, between 1st and 2nd Avenues), on Friday, Sept. 15th at 9:30PM; Sunday, Sept. 17th at 5:00PM; Monday, Sept. 18th at 9:30PM; Tuesday, Sept. 19th at 9:15PM and Thursday, Sept. 21st at 6:30PM.
Danny Boy "tells the story of Danny Bloch, whose search for romance is complicated by his stature--he stands about four-feet tall.
Danny Boy takes us through Danny's collisions and conciliations with friends, family, lovers and body issues on his dark, funny and poignant quest for love and self-esteem in present day New York," as the show is described in press notes.
The cast features Stephen Jutras in the role of Danny, along with Kris Bratton, Deshja Driggs-Hall, T
Roy Hall, Joan Poust and Sarah Schoenberg.
Danny Boy is directed by Christopher Goodrich. The production stage manager is Stephanie Pacheco; set and lighting design by Christopher Hoyt; original music and sound by Brian Gelfand; and costume design is by Kathryn Squitieri.
"I didn't set out to write a message play about the challenges faced by any one group," says writer Marc Goldsmith. "Danny and all the characters are individuals with unique, complicated identities. At the same time, Danny's struggle to rise above his fears and to accept himself with all his strengths and imperfections is a pretty universal story that anyone can relate to."
Goldsmith's plays include
Miami Twilight, Comparing Books (New Stage Theater, Jackson, MS) and
Danny Boy. He is also the co-author (with Laurence Holzman) of a screenplay,
Fella, which was a semifinalist in the Chesterfield Writer's Film Project Competition and also co-wrote the story for the screenplay
Children of James. They two are writing a second original screenplay entitled
The Queen is in the Parlour.
