Daniel Craig, who last starred on Broadway opposite his wife Rachel Weisz in Harold Pinter's BETRAYAL, recently expressed a desire to "do some theater in New York" but not on Broadway. Well, someone was listening!
The New York Post writes that the James Bond actor is in talks to star as 'Iago' in OTHELLO off-Broadway at the New York Theatre Workshop next spring.
Whether Craig would go for a Broadway transfer that summer is up in the air. And no word yet on a director or other cast members; BroadwayWorld will bring you more information as the project shapes up!
Craig will be following in the footsteps of actors such as Rory Kinnear, Bob Hoskins, Christopher Walken, Ian McKellen, Ewan McGregor, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kenneth Branagh and the great Laurence Olivier, among others, who have portrayed the Shakespearean villain onstage and on-screen.
Aside from BETRAYAL, Craig also appeared in 2009's A STEADY RAIN. He launched his career onstage by training with the National Youth Theatre and Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and later starred in the Royal National Theatre's production of ANGELS IN AMERICA.
He is the latest James Bond, having starred as 007 in CASINO ROYALE, QUANTUM OF SOLACE, SKYFALL and the upcoming installment of the franchise, SPECTRE. Among his other recent film credits are THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, DREAM HOUSE, COWBOYS & ALIENS, THE GOLDEN COMPASS and more.
