Green Space is pleased to offer a diverse roster of new/emerging artists in June. Fertile Ground will present new work by various artists and Take Root will present an evening of work by Danaka Dance and Dances by Catherine Tharin.
TAKE ROOT, now in its 6th season, aids in the continued development and performance of new dance work of various aesthetics by providing choreographers with the opportunity to be produced in a full-length or paired evening of work. This once a month series supports dance makers by providing our venue, Green Space, with full technical and marketing support.
June 5th & 6th 2015About the Work:
Danaka Dance: The work will thoroughly investigate the visceral sensation of time and the importance of the tangible memories we carry with us wherever we go. Exploring where memories go and where are they stored in our minds, this work aims to give the observer an opportunity to sense something that has always been there and is there to stay.
Dances by Catherine Tharin: Catherine Tharin choreographs intimate, jewel-like dances that are compelling, wistful, and filled with possibility, hope, and poetic power. Carried by movement that is lush, snappy, and vigorous, the work exists in a compact, personal world. The choreography confides in the audience by slowly disclosing an elegant, nuanced movement narrative that traces an emotional and rhythmic arc.
Company/ Choreographer Biographies:
Danaka Dance: Israeli born artist, D?ana Katz is the founder, artistic director and Choreographer of New York City's based DANAKA DANCE Company. She received her BA in Dance from Melbourne University's VCA, Australia and later was awarded a partial Dean Grant as well as an Emerging Jewish Artist Fellowship towards her MFA studies at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Katz, an award-winning dance filmmaker (American Dance Festival), celebrates over a decade of collaborative, investigative dance making and is dedicated to presenting work interlaced with other disciplines. Her current ongoing and long-term project, Thousand Plateaus is supported by The Kevin Spacey Foundation, and the company was previously supported with grants by The America-Israel Cultural Foundation, Israeli Lottery Council for the Arts, Emerging Jewish Artist Fellowship at New York University, Israeli Cultural Institute (IKI) in Budapest, and the Israeli consulates in Spain, Canada, Hungary and New York. Dana was the Bessie Schoenberg's artist in residence at The Yard in Martha's Vineyard, Springboard Danse Montreal, and Chez Bushwick in Brooklyn. Her work has been commissioned internationally, by The Suzanne Dellal Center for the Arts and Warehouse 2 in TelAviv, La Mama (NY), The 92nd Street Y (NY), The Guelph Dance Festival (CANADA), Danca em Foco (BRAZIL), Act Festival (SPAIN), Dance Media Tokyo (JAPAN), The Flea (NY), Triskelion Arts (NY), Thessaloniki Video Dance Festival (GREECE) among others. Her work was the finalist in The ZsoloDuo Festival (HUNGARY). Dana is the curator of The Out of Israel Dance Festival at The 92nd Street Y, where she annually hosts some of today's most stimulating works by Israeli choreographers. She is on faculty at Gibney Dance for teaching contemporary and composition, as well as a Teaching Media Fellow, where she combines her cinematic experience and skilled eye for dance to create dance films.
Dances by Catherine Tharin: Ms. Tharin is a choreographer, educator, and curator. Her choreography has been presented in numerous tri-state venues, as well as in the Midwest and Washington, DC. She is a full-time lecturer at Iona College where she teaches choreography, dance history, Hawkins technique, and somatic investigation and directs the Iona College Dance Ensemble. Her dance and aesthetic development were primarily formed while dancing with the Erick Hawkins Dance Company, 1988 - 1994 where she is grateful to have studied under Erick Hawkins, Lucia Dlugosweski (composer), and seasoned company members who imparted a refined and 'pure' approach to dance. She has taught the Erick Hawkins dance technique nationally and internationally in extended residencies, master classes and workshops. Since 2006, she has directed and curated the 92Y Fridays At Noon series where she programs choreographers and dancers, composers, musicians, authors, critics, filmmakers and set designers. These programs are recognized in numerous major publications and provide a unique look at many legacy artists. Fridays At Noon has also provided support for young choreographers who have launched noted careers. Catherine is a graduate of the Dance Education Laboratory, Connecticut College (BA) and Columbia University Teachers College (MA). She is a member of the Hunter College Dance Advisory Committee, the Dance Notation Bureau Advisory Committee, and is an Emeritus Board Member of The Field. She is delighted to have worked with three composers on this project. Her artistic heart is in the pleasure of watching movement unfold.
FERTILE GROUND is a monthly new works showcase for emerging and established artists now in its 9th season, producing the work of over 50 choreographers each year. This non-curated performance event features five or six choreographers each evening and includes a post-performance discussion with wine and cheese, moderated by Green Space's Artistic Director, Valerie Green.
