The Dan Weiss trio, headed by drummer Dan Weiss, will play two New York shows this week to support the release of Timshel, Weiss' recent Sunnyside Records Release.

May 17, 2010, the trio will play a ten o'clock show at the 55 Bar, 55 Christopher Street (www.55bar.com).  May 20, 2010, Search and Restore (www.searchandrestore.com) presents The Dan Weiss Trio and The Kermit Driscoll Quartet, headed by bassist Kermit Driscoll, at 45 Bleeker Street (www.45bleeker.com).

Weiss and Driscoll work so often that it is rare to see them perform as band leaders and composers, so it seems appropriate that they should be leading their own bands together on the same bill. Kermit Driscoll was a mainstay in Bill Frisell's band for 10 years, and his current quartet includes Kris Davis, Brooke Sofferman, and Terrence McManus. Dan Weiss has just released his newest album, a suite called Timshel, on Sunnyside Records, and his trio will be performing the suite in full at this show.

Backed by his long-time trio mates, pianist Jacob Sacks and drummer Thomas Morgan, Weiss weaves elements of different compositional styles and knowledge of Indian rhythms into the language of jazz on his twelve-track CD. "Each piece in this record draws upon a specific inspiration which has captured my curiosity and imagination the last couple of years," Weiss writes in the liner notes. "The intention behind this record was to take the essence of each of these inspirations and to create a musical narrative. It is intended to be listened to as one piece, uninterrupted. While each piece is its own song, they each serve a larger purpose which is the suite."
