Tomorrow night's special 9PM ET episode of NBC TV's popular comedy "Scrubs" - subtitled "My Musical," with original songs by Avenue Q's Tony winning songwriting team of Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx - will feature Avenue Q Tony Award-nominee Stephanie D'Abruzzo as its guest star.
According to production notes, "'Scrubs' Sacred Heart is turned into a full scale Broadway stage when Patti (Stephanie D'Abruzzo) checks in complaining of hearing incessant music. While trying to determine the cause of this strange complaint the residents of Sacred Heart Hospital star in their own musical. Carla (Judy Reyes) and Turk (Donald Faison) tango over her decision to be a stay at home mom or to return to work, while Elliot struggles with telling J.D. (Zach Braff) that she doesn't want to be roommates with him anymore -- both girls hope that the boy's "Guy Love" will help them through the rough patch. All the while the staff wonders if life would be happier if everyone was in constant harmony. John C. McGinley, Ken Jenkins and Neil Flynn also star."
In an unusual move, NBC released two "Scrubs" music videos on its YouTube account well in advance of the episode's airing, featuring first the Turk-J.D. duet "Guy Love" in November and the musical number "Everything Comes Down to Poo" in December.
With music and lyrics by Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx, book by Jeff Whitty, and directed by Jason Moore, Avenue Q won 3 Tony Awards in 2004, including Best Musical. The musical is produced on Broadway by Kevin McCollum, Robyn Goodman, Jeffrey Seller, Vineyard Theatre and The New Group.
"'Scrubs' is heading into its sixth season, having received two consecutive Emmy nominations for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2005 and 2006," according to NBC.com notes. "'Scrubs' focuses on the strange experiences of J.D. (Braff), a medical resident, as he continues on his healing career in a surreal hospital, crammed full of unpredictable staffers and patients -- where humor and tragedy can collide at any time."
