The first results show of the season yielded unsurprising results following this week's episode in which contestants performed a quickstep or jive. Going into the tonight's results broadcast, Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas were in the lead with points, followed by Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower who were tied with William Levy and Cheryl Burke. In third, Jaleel White and Kym Johnson. The broadcast featured performances by Matt Nathanson featuring Sugarland.
In typical DANCING fashion and structure, the elimination process was split into 4 groups: three groups of contestants with at least one being in jeopardy of going home. The first included Melissa Gilbert, Martina Navratilova, and Gladys Knight. After announcing that Gilbert and Knight were safe, host Tom Bergeron broke the news, as expected as it, to Navratilova that she was up for elimination.
The second group, made up of Roshon Fegan, Jaleel White, and William Levy, were the first selection of male contestants facing the possibility of heading home. While none delivered an overtly stellar performance last night, it seemed as if former frunt runner White, based on the merit of their routine alone, might be heading home. Even his 2 year old daughter thought last night's performance was lacking, who apparently shouted "Dora" and walked out of the room, he told host Brooke Burke-Charvet. It was ultimately announced that White was in fact safe, along with Levy, and that Fegan would join Navratilova in the group of potential eliminated competitors.
Jenkins, Maria Menounos, and Sherri Shepherd were the next contestants up for elimination, though all were announced to be safe until next week. It was reported last night that Menounos had strained her ribs in rehearsal during the previous week, but they are, in fact, broken - though she's not concerned it'll stem the potential of her future performances.
Finally, Jack Wager, Donald Driver, and Gavin DeGraw took the stage to determine who would be joining Navratilova and Fegan. Both Wagner and Driver delivered acceptable routines, with DeGraw's falling noticeably flat. And that flatness ultimately landed he and partner Karina Smirnoff in the bottom three.
The first contestant to survive, able to breathe again at least for another week, was Fegan, leaving DeGraw and Navratilova. "[I'm] hoping there's next week," Navratilova said, though ultimately, it was announced there wouldn't be. The first contestant to bid the DANCING stage adieu was former tennis pro, Martina Navratilova. After two stiff performances, the quiet charm she's been noted for wasn't enough to save her from elimination. "It was an amazing experience, I just wish it had lasted longer" she said.
