As described by the Currier Museum, Manchester, NH, where Haven Smith exhibited in 2009:
Smith, a sculptor and painter working in Northwood, New Hampshire, carves elegant, abstract sculptures out of granite boulders found around his home and studio. Using specially designed diamond saws, he cuts voids into stone monoliths and slices boulders into curving sheets. His sculptures and his paintings on wood, lead, and slate feature patterns and textures inspired by photographs of the natural world and his study of ancient languages and symbols.
At ABC Stone, Haven Smith presents two new free-standing sculptures, a functional art piece, and a wall-based sculpture-three distinct forms for his visual language to take shape. Continuing his formally rigorous sculpture from found stone, "Boogie Woogie II" and "Shimmy" are simultaneously modernist and organic. He creates this tension by contrasting the works' geometric base with the sculptures' lyricism, using a working process Smith describes as "deconstructing the boulder." Smith offers a similar tension and improbable presentation of the stone in "Wave Bench III". The functional art piece blends the curvaceous line of the undulating seat with strict geometry in the cut-out creating the legs. For "Vernalis", Smith creates a tableau grid of rectangular slate panels. Smith hand applies organic shapes of white gold leaf to the slate's surface. The gold's inherent reflectivity adds dimension and light to this lively, yet elegant work.
