(ph)(f)reaking has been devised by the ensemble through a laboratory process exploring hacking through a gendered lens and will show on Saturday, Jan 21st at 10pm at Dixon Place. Tickets are $15. The Dixon Place Lounge is open before and after the show, and you can bring your drink in the theater! Bar proceeds directly support DP's artists and mission.
The reading is a first look at the narrative that will ultimately inform a fully immersive, game-like environment for a future production that will utilize video game technology to co-create a performance along with the audience. This presentation follows two years of research into creating an audience-driven performance environment examining toxic masculinity within the hacktivist vigilante movement. Early development was supported by a travel grant from the Network of Ensemble Theaters. A segment of (ph)(f)reaking debuted at the FURYFactory Festival of Ensemble and Devised Theater in June 2016.
About (ph)(f)reaking: In an age of unlimited power via keyboard and conflicting models of masculinity presented online, Joe Doesn't know how to assert himself in the world (Wide Web). Dumped by his girlfriend and feeling low, he turns to the Internet for guidance, advice, and video tutorials in order to crack the code of becoming desirable. Digital decisions dent the development of Joe's worldview, bringing him closer to making irrevocable choices IRL. When 'Revenge of the Nerds' meets the cautionary tale of Icarus, a youthful thirst for knowledge, connections, and intimacy turn to suffering.
About Critical Point Theatre:? Critical Point Theatre, an NYC ensemble-based performance company, was founded in 2013 to create productions - with and for publics - that explore the negative space between narratives from peoples of difference. In creating a raucous mix of transmedia projects that aim to close the gap, we want to push boldly beyond boundaries and thus, strengthen the fabric of communities. Along the way, we have performed in seven cities, two countries, and five festivals, picking up the Audience Choice Award at FRIGID New York in 2014 for A List of Irrational Fears for Future Leaders of the World and the Serling Memorial Award for The Grayscale podcast. Our current development cycle is a multiyear examination of morality involved in web culture and gender/sexuality.
