Variety reports that the power team of Craig Zadan and Neil Meron are developing a musical event series for FOX based on Harlem's famed Cotton Club, which enjoyed its heydey during the roaring '20s. According to the site, the project is currently in early development at the script phase.

The project, to be titled COTTON CLUB, is described as a "sexy, soapy music series is about the club and the interconnected lives of the black entertainers who performed there and the white gangsters who ran it." Ayanna Floyd will pen the series and serve as showrunner, while Zadan and Meron, the force behind NBC's recent live musical broadcasts, will serve as executive producers. Tony winner Kenny Leon (A RAISIN IN THE SUN, FENCES) will direct and executive produce, while former X FACTOR judge LA Reid will serve as executive music supervisor.

Meron and Zadan have been involved in a string of hit film and television musicals, including movie adaptations of "Hairspray" and the Oscar-winning "Chicago," as well as NBC's live events "The Sound of Music," "Peter Pan", "The Wiz" and "Hairspray." They have also produced successful Broadway revivals of "Promises, Promises" and "How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying."
