This Weekend At Cornelia Street Cafe, Fri Jun 4th 9:00PM & 10:30PM DOUGLAS YATES-KENNY BROOKS: (Douglas Yates, alto saxophone; Kenny Brooks, tenor saxophone; Leo Genovese, piano; Chris Lightcap, bass; Pete Zimmer, drums)

Douglas Yates and Kenny Brooks admit to being heavily influenced by their mentor/guru - saxophone master George Garzone. Natives of the San Francisco Bay Area, Yates and Brooks went to Boston in 1984 to study with Garzone - Yates at Berklee, Brooks at the New England Conservatory. Their education at the feet of the master included weekly pilgrimages to the Willow Jazz Club to hear Garzone and the Fringe. In 1989 Brooks returned to San Francisco while Yates moved to NYC.
Fast forward 18 years. Upon his arrival in NYC in 2007 Brooks reunites with Yates and Garzone in the form of Garzone's "3 Tenors" quintet, which also includes Pete Zimmer on drums and Peter Slavov on bass. Branching off from "3 Tenors" comes "In The Zone". Yates and Brooks explore the spirit of the music of George Garzone through some of his compositions as well as their own originals.

Proud of their lineage through the "Garzone School", their work continues "In The Zone".

The JOHN McNEIL/BILL McHENRY QUARTET
playing music from their new Sunnyside CD, due out in September.
John McNeil -- Trumpet, Bill McHenry - Tenor, Neal Miner - Bass, Jochen Rueckert - Drums

This Saturday, as the McNeil/McHenry band is playing Cornelia Street, they will be saying goodbye to Poul Weis, the longtime booker of the club
and the person most responsible for the consistent music policy there. Poul is returning to Denmark very soon, perhaps to draw cartoons
of you-know-who, perhaps not. Maybe he'll just play his trumpet as the lord Odin intended.
At any rate, he will be missed by the musicians. For one thing, he's one of those people that is always calm, no matter what. In fact,
John & Bill once set him on fire just to see what would happen. Sure enough, he methodically extinguished himself and called an ambulance...
some screaming, sure, but not so much as you'd think. Most of all, though, as a good musician he had empathy for the performers and would consistently make correct musical decisions. Tough act to follow.
