Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Amanda Baisinger will perform some of her most recent original material Tuesday, October 19. Baisinger's jazz sound combined with soulful lyrics will shape her latest collection of songs, which are scheduled for an upcoming CD release, following up on the success of her "Short Songs" album. "Short Songs" was acclaimed for Baisinger's poetic expressions of personal experience, her mellow combination of jazz and pop that created a warm and romantic atmosphere. Her influences range from Milton Nacimento to Billie Holiday but her singing style and story-telling are most reminiscent of Joni Mitchell.

Woodwind player and composer Paul Shapiro, who's earned wide acclaim for his three Tzadik CDs and his dynamic performances, brings his fabled "Ribs and Brisket Revue" -an uplifting, funky-historical Harlemite Yiddish Swing band back to the famed Cornelia Street Café for their sixth straight New Year's Eve Celebration! As a member of the Microscopic Septet in the 1980s and early 1990s, Shapiro was part of a small but vibrant community of jazz musicians who refused to submit to the narrow, neoconservative ethos of the day, and chose instead to celebrate the entire tradition, from early swing to the avant-garde. You can hear that joyous open-mindedness in all of Shapiro's subsequent work, including his two previous albums for John Zorn's Tzadik label, Midnight Minyan and It's in the Twilight, which subject traditional synagogue melodies to a variety of treatments, from rhythm and blues to modal jazz.

This engagement is an offshoot of my trio Open Loose and features a longtime collaborator, Ellery Eskelin on tenor saxophone and a drummer, who is new to me, Ches Smith. The pieces utilize the technique of modular taxis designed to generate responses and reactions from the participants on and off the stage. We will be performing mostly new and undocumented music.

Trombonist and composer Jacob Garchik has worked with Slavic Soul Party, Lee Konitz and the Kronos Quartet. Here he presents elegant and energetic compositions for a unique, bass-less trio. Three of the busiest young freelancers in New York explore, exchange ideas, and play.

8:30PM 21ST CENTURY SCHIZOID MUSIC PRESENTS:THE BATTERIES DUO

Gareth Flowers, trumpeter of the acclaimed International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) presents two sets this evening. The first is for a trumpet and piano duo, featuring the pianist StEve Beck and the cornet solos of Herbert L. Clarke, a turn of the (20th) century composer, the second set is with The Batteries Duo, an electro-acoustic trumpet and laptop duo with Josh Frank.

Originally from Arlingon, Virginia, Gareth Flowers is an electro-acoustic trumpeter, know for "shimmering vibrato" and "wide-ranging lines" (NYTimes, June '10) and has performed with the acclaimed International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) since 2003. Although his musical journey has included performances with the major orchestras of San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia, and Seoul, he relishes making music on an intimate scale, and performs with ICE, the TILT Creative Brass Band, the Argento New Music Project, and the Tri-Centric Foundation's (Anthony Braxton) orchestra. He often performs in theatrical productions on Broadway, and has recorded for many fine musicians including Gabriel Kahane, Anthony Coleman, and duYun. As a composer/performer, he has performed his own eccentric electro-acoustic Inventions at the Clark Studio Theater of Lincoln Center, and the Tank.

Steven Beck, piano, is a graduate of the Juilliard School, where his teachers were Seymour Lipkin and Peter Serkin. Mr. Beck made his debut with the National Symphony Orchestra. He toured Japan as a soloist with the New York Symphonic Ensemble, and has appeared with the New Juilliard Ensemble, Sequitur, and the Virginia Symphony. Mr. Beck has performed as soloist and chamber musician at the Kennedy Center, Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, Miller Theater, and Steinway Hall. He is an Artist Presenter and regular performer at Bargemusic, and performs frequently as a musician with the Mark Morris Dance Group. He has worked with Elliot Carter, Henri Dutilleux, and George Perle, and has appeared with ensembles such as Speculum Musicae, Sospeso, Friends and Enemies of New Music, and Counterinduction.

Trumpeter, composer, and producer, Josh Frank leads an eclectic musical life in New York City. Over the past few years Josh's engagements have ranged from writing music for companies such as Corcoran, and Vornado Realty, to producing musical events for Rock and Republic Jeans. As a trumpet player, Josh has performed with pop artists such as Sufjan Stevens, members of The National, Boyz II Men and regularly plays with the ground-breaking ensemble The Knights. As a producer, Josh has worked on classical albums released on Sony Classical and produces regularly with engineer Bill Siegmund at Digital Island Studios. Josh has started his own company, Galien Productions, which creates and licenses music for media.

The music of Herbert L. Clarke is delightfully lighthearted, tuneful, and virtuosic, and was often heard during summertime in parks all across the country, usually performed by a community band, in a truly Americana fashion.

The Batteries Duo is the first and only electro-acoustic trumpet duo of it's kind in New York's creative music scene. Using primarily trumpets and samplers, the Batteries duo creates a unique breed of sound art. Drawing on inspiration from Medeski, Martin and Wood to Bill Frisell to electronic artists such as Deadelus, and the Books, The Batteries duo combines found sounds and sampled material which they mashup against their virtuosic and vibrational trumpet playing to create a unique variety of nu jazz/indie-electronica/post-classicism. Their set will be in support of their late-summer release of Les Amusements, their freshman EP.
