On Monday, May 19, 2014, NewYorkRep will present private industry readings of the new stage drama STALKING THE BOGEYMAN in midtown Manhattan.
Based on the true story by David Holthouse as first told in the Denver Westword newspaper, STALKING THE BOGEYMAN was famously featured on the popular weekly public radio broadcast "This American Life" in 2011 and has prompted an ongoing array of national media attention since then.
A humanizing story of transformation, healing and forgiveness of the highest order, STALKING THE BOGEYMAN follows one man's powerful hunt for revenge as he comes to grips with the killer inside him.
In the spring of 2003, David Holthouse was a successful, award-winning journalist. But no one knew that David had two incredibly dark secrets -- first, that 25 years ago he was the victim of a violent rape, and now, that he was planning the ultimate revenge on the man responsible.
"This time last year I was plotting to kill a man. This time last year I had a gun, and a silencer, and a plan. I had staked out the man's tract home in the Denver suburbs. I had followed him to and from his job in a high-tech office park. I was confident I would get away with murder because there was nothing in recent history to connect me to him. Homicide investigators look for motive, and mine was buried 25 years in the past. ["This American Life," January 2011]
Adapted and directed by Markus Potter, STALKING THE BOGEYMAN was created from the original true story and subsequent news reports, as well as conversations with Holthouse, lectures he has given around the country and original text by the playwright, with additional writing by Shane Zeigler and Shane Stokes.
The cast for the May 19 industry readings is lead by Corey Stoll ("House of Cards," Midnight in Paris, The Bourne Legacy) as the Bogeyman and Drama Desk Award winner Bill Heck (Cabaret, The Orphans' Home Cycle) as David. Rounding out the six-person cast are Shawn Elliott (Marie Christine, City of Angels), Lee Roy Rodgers (Tribes, Orson's Shadow), Ray Virta (An Enemy of the People, Arcadia) and Amy Van Nostrand (The God Committee, The Hothouse).
(Drama Desk Award winner Frederick Weller, who was originally announced to participate in the May 19 readings, has withdrawn due to scheduling conflicts.)
David Holthouse is an award-winning journalist, screenwriter and documentary filmmaker living in Anchorage, Alaska. His work has been published in national magazines including Rolling Stone, Men's Journal, The Nation and many more.
STALKING THE BOGEYMAN had its world-premiere production last fall at the NC Stage Company in Asheville, North Carolina. A commercial Off-Broadway production is in development for this fall.
STALKING THE BOGEYMAN is presented by NewYorkRep, R. Erin Craig, Soumyo Sarkar, David Syner, Wolfstone Productions and Santa Barbara Holdings
