Composer Debra Kaye's ENCOUNTERING LORCA to Premiere This Weekend

American composer Debra Kaye will celebrate the New York premiere of her work Encountering Lorca for string orchestra on Saturday, October 22 at 8pm. The concert will be held at West Park Presbyterian Church, 165 W 86th Street in Manhattan. Tickets are $15 at the door; $10 in advance.

The light and dark poetic shadings of Federico Garcia Lorca, Spain's most renowned poet, is at the heart of Kaye's composition. The CompCord String Orchestra will perform her work as part of the Composer Concordance All About Spain concert featuring Flamenco style music and dance, conducted by Scott Jackson Wiley.

Kaye has been hailed as a "unique voice in American music, transcendent, witty, profound." Her growing catalogue includes close to 40 chamber music, art songs, choral and theatrical compositions. Kaye has been recognized with ASCAP Plus Awards since 2009 for her "contributions to American Music." This season will see the premiere of three additional new works including Mouth of the Sky and The Dance the Turtle Dreamed from Kaye's String Quartet No. 1, presented by the New York Composers Circle, and Ikarus Among the Stars for orchestra commissioned by the Portland Youth Philharmonic. Last season's highlights included the premiere of five compositions. Hey Yud Yud - Parallel Universes presented by Composers Concordance in their series Pitches at an Exhibition - CHORUS 72, Dance to Unknowing - a Klezmer Prelude, and the Impassioned Nightingale from Kaye's String Quartet No. 1, featuring the Klang Quartet. Ikarus - Duo for Binya for violin and viola, commissioned by the Community Music Center of Portland celebrated its premiere in Portland and subsequently its New York premiere on the National Association of Composers, USA's Spring Serenade concert. Kaye's composition, Freedom & Truth for voice and violin, inspired by women's rights activist Margaret Fuller's poem of the same name, was commissioned by BeaconArts (Beacon, NY) for the unveiling of a historic landmark in Fuller's honor. Buscando, Kaye's composition for solo harpsichord, commissioned by Arthur Haas of Yale University, was published by Bellmann Musik in their two volume collection, The Contemporary Harpsichordist.

Recognized by the Wall Street Journal as a booster for New York composers through both its concerts and its record label, Composers Concordance strives to present contemporary music in innovative ways, with an emphasis on thematic programming. Their overriding vision is to promote contemporary music, composers and new works as a rightful and respected part of society. Other artists on the program include dancer Sonia Olla, singer Ismael Fernandez, violinist Miranda Cuckson and flamenco guitarist Pedro Cortes as well as works by Pedro Cortes, Dave Soldier, Dan Cooper, Gene Pritsker, David Saperstein, Masatora Goya, Eleanor Cory, Peter Jarvis and Daniel Palkowski.
