John Doyle will direct Stephen Sondheim and George Furth
's Tony Award-winning musical,
Company, on Broadway in November at a theater
to-be-determined, it was announced by the show's New York producers,
The
Routh/Frankel/Viertel/Baruch Group (co-producers of Doyle's current Broadway
production of
Sweeney Todd).
This new production of Company, which recently premiered to rave reviews and is enjoying a sold-out run at Cincinnati's Playhouse in the Park, continues Doyle's method of working with actor-musicians seen to groundbreaking effect in the currently running Broadway production of Sweeney Todd.
Company features direction by Mr. Doyle, musical direction and orchestrations by Mary-Mitchell Campbell, set design by David Gallo, costume design by Ann Hould-Ward, and lighting design by Thomas C. Hase.
The original production of
Company, directed by Harold Prince, with musical staging by Michael Bennett, opened on Broadway at the Alvin (currently the Neil Simon) Theatre on April 26, 1970. The revolutionary musical garnered a record 14 Tony Award nominations, winning five, including Best Musical. The show was last seen on Broadway for a limited engagement in 1995.
Most of the cast of the current Cincinnati production (which closes April 14) are expected to reprise their roles on Broadway.
