Columbia School of the Arts Professor Anne Bogart Awarded Doris Duke Artist Grant

The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation has named Columbia University School of the Arts Theatre Arts Professor Anne Bogart to the first class of Doris Duke Artists.

Bogart, head of the Directing Concentration within the Theatre Arts Program, is among 21 vital and productive performing artists in theatre, contemporary dance, jazz and multidisciplinary work who were selected for the inaugural award. Artists were chosen based on demonstrated evidence of exceptional creativity, ongoing self-challenge and the continuing potential to make significant contributions to their fields in the future.

“Anne Bogart is one of Columbia’s most admired and beloved Theatre faculty members,” said Carol Becker, Dean of Faculty of the School of the Arts. “She’s a remarkable director who has had enormous influence on the field as a practitioner and an educator. She is utterly deserving of this award.”

The 2012 Doris Duke Artists will share a total of $5.775 million as part of this unprecedented new initiative of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation. Each will receive an unrestricted, multi-year cash grant of $225,000, as well as additional targeted support for audience development. Creative Capital, DDCF’s primary partner in the Doris Duke Performing Artist Awards, will also offer several professional development opportunities to help awardees make the most of their grants.

“This first class of 21 Doris Duke Artists is known for creating work that inspires and challenges audiences across the country, and indeed around the globe,” said Rachel Ford, Program Director for the Doris Duke Performing Artists Awards. “At its heart, this award recognizes the important contributions of these performing artists to the dynamic cultural fabric of our nation.”

Anne Bogart is the Artistic Director of the Siti Company, which she founded with Japanese director Tadashi Suzuki in 1992. She is the recipient of two Obie Awards, a Bessie Award, a USA Fellowship, a Rockefeller Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Recent works with SITI include Under Construction; Who Do You Think You Are; Radio Macbeth; Hotel Cassiopeia; Death and the Ploughman; La Dispute; Score; bobrauschenbergamerica; Room; War of the Worlds; Cabin Pressure; The Radio Play; Alice’s Adventures; Culture of Desire; Bob; Going, Going, Gone; Small Lives/Big Dreams; The Medium; Noel Coward’s Hay Fever and Private Lives; August Strindberg’s Miss Julie; and Charles Mee’s Orestes 2.0. Operas include Nicholas and Alexandra (Los Angeles Opera), Marina: A Captive Spirit (American Opera Projects) and Lilith and Seven Deadly Sins (New York City Opera). Bogart is the author of several books: A Director Prepares, The Viewpoints Book, And Then, You Act and most recently Conversations with Anne.
