With Victoria Clark taking a vacation of her own, Patti Cohenour will take on the role of Margaret in The Light in the Piazza. Broadway veteran Cohenour, who ordinarily plays Signora Naccarelli in the Tony Award-winning musical and who is also Clark's understudy, will fill in through August 21st.
Clark won a 2005 Tony Award as Best Actress in a Musical for playing Margaret. Bruised from her own withering marriage, Margaret attempts to impede her daughter Clara's romance with the dashing Fabrizio while on vacation in Florence. The Light in the Piazza has surpassed all expectations to become one of the biggest musical hits in Lincoln Center's history; the Adam Guettel musical recently extended its run to January 1st, 2006 (it was to have closed this June).
Cohenour, who was with Piazza during its Seattle and Chicago engagements, received a 1986 Tony Award nomination for her performance as Rosa Bud in The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Her other Broadway credits include A Doll's Life, Big River, The Phantom of the Opera(also in Canada) and The Sound of Music. At Encores!, she performed in Sweet Adeline and other credits include Show Boat and The Pirates of Penzance.
It was also recently announced that Aaron Lazar (On the Town at ENO, Oklahoma!) will succeed Tony-nominee Matthew Morrison as Fabrizio on September 2nd, and Chris Sarandon (Nick and Nora, The Rothschilds, films such as Dog Day Afternoon) will take over for Mark Harelik as Signor Naccarelli on September 13th.
With a book by Craig Lucas (Reckless, Prelude to a Kiss), music and lyrics by Guettel (Floyd Collins) and direction by Bartlett Sher, The Light in the Piazza
won six 2005 Tony Awards--Best Score, Best Actress, Best Orchestrations and three design awards (the show features costumes by Catherine Zuber, lighting by Christopher Akerlind and sets by Michael Yeargan). Based on the novella by Elizabeth Spencer, Piazza opened at Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont Theatre (150 W.
65th St.) on April 18th. The performance schedule for The Light in the Piazza is
