Joe Chambers, drums/vibes/composer/arranger; Craig Handy, Sam Dillon, tenor saxophones; Sharel Cassity, Tim Green, alto saxophones; Conrad Herwig, Steve Davis, Max Siegel, James Burton, trombones; Frank Green, Tanya Darby, David Weiss, Keyon Harrold, trumpets; Xavier Davis, piano; Dwayne Burno, bass; Steve Berrios, drums/percussion, also featuring, new singing sensation Nicole Guiland.
The Centerpiece for the orchestra is the commissioned composition "Moving Pictures". a four movement suite composed and premiered for the Lincoln Center Orchestra in March of 2003. This suite was conceived as a kind of Concerto for Drums (percussion) and Orchestra, Synthesizing polyrhythms, "straight ahead" swing , Afro-Cuban rhythms, with lush orchestration.
The program will also feature arrangements of compositions by: Joe Henderson, Thad Jones, & Max Roach.
Featured Musicians: Grammy award winner - trombonist Conrad Herwig, of the "Latin-Side Series", outstanding multi-reed specialist - Craig Handy - (Featured with Mingus Dynasty Orchestra, Herbie Hancock, movie "Kansas City") two of the most talented and sought after players on the scene today - Xavier Davis, and Dwayne Burno; and Steve Berrios - one of the top Latin, and jazz percussionists on the New York scene today. Berrios' CD "And then some:" recorded on the Milestone Record Label, was nominated for a Grammy in 1996, also featuring, new singing sensation Nicole Guiland.
Joe Chambers was selected as the first Thomas S.Kenan Distinguished Professor of Jazz in the Department of Music at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Tenure began in the fall of 2008. Joe Chambers established himself as a drummer and composer in the early 60's as a member of the 1960's fraternity that recorded some of the Blue Note Record Label's greatest music. Chambers can lay claim to a place alongside such innovative artists as Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Bobby Hutcherson and Chic Corea. Some of his recording credits include:
Hubbard's BREAKING POINT; Shorter's ADAM'S APPLE; ALL SEEING EYE; SCHIZOPHRENIA; AND ETCETERA McCopy Tyner's TENDER MOMENTS; Andrew Hill's COMPULSION and ANDREW; Bobby Hutcherson's DIALOGUE; COMPONENTS; TOTAL ECLIPSE, and NOW; Chic Corea's TONES FOR JOAN'S BONES; INNER SPACE and THREE PIANOS.
Compositions by Joe Chambers have been recorded by Bobby Hutcherson, Freddie Hubbard, Max Roach, and Donald Byrd.
