Climate Change Theatre Action 2017's Official NY Launch to Donate Proceeds to Harvey Relief

Join us on Sunday, October 1, 5-8pm at The Artist Co-op, 500 West 52nd Street, 3W, for the official New York Launch of Climate Change Theatre Action 2017.

The New York Launch is a partnership between The Arctic Cycle, The Food Plays, and The Artist Co-op. The Launch kicks off the 2017 Climate Change Theatre Action (CCTA) initiative with performances, community gathering, and refreshments. Performances will feature a sampling of the CCTA collection of short plays, music, and fresh works inspired by climate. Throughout the evening, attendees can participate in actions that will help influence our local community toward more sustainable practices.

A collaboration between the Center for Sustainable Practice in the Arts, NoPassport Theatre Alliance, The Arctic Cycle, Theatre Without Borders, and York University, CCTA is a worldwide series of readings and performances of short climate change plays presented from October 1 to November 18, 2017 to coincide with the United Nations COP23 meeting in Germany.

Following the model pioneered by NoPassport, we asked fifty writers from around the world to write short plays about an aspect of climate change. These plays were made available to producing collaborators who will present 200 events in over 40 countries. Events range from readings in classrooms to fully staged performances and will take place in theatres, high schools, universities, eco-centers, community centers, on radio, and outdoors.

Over a dozen CCTA events are planned in New York City by groups including The Anthropologists, Upstream Artists' Collective, Brooklyn Yard, Artichoke Dance, Artists Rise Up New York, Multistages, Immigrants' Theatre Project, Benjamin Franklin High School, and the College of Staten Island, with a special preview at NYU Gallatin School on September 15 for the Gallatin Climate Change Initiative: A Conference.

About the Launch Organizers:

The Arctic Cycle, founded by playwright Chantal Bilodeau, uses theatre to foster dialogue about our global climate crisis, create a positive vision of the future, and inspire people to take action. Operating on the principle that complex problems must be addressed through collaborative efforts, The Arctic Cycle works with artists across disciplines and geographic borders, solicits input from earth and social scientists, and actively seeks community and educational partners.

The Food Plays is a performance-based initiative founded by writer, director, and producer Julia Levine to cultivate community around topics of food and food justice. The Food Plays are comprised of a series of performance works raising specific questions about the Western industrial food system, including: how did we get to be disconnected from where our food comes from; who makes choices about our agricultural system; why is there food surplus around the world, yet there is so much hunger?

The Artist Co-op is a coworking space for performing artists, uniting New York City's actors directors, dancers, playwrights, and more, with programs and services to support the performing arts community.
