JANUARY 28-31
CIVIL TWILIGHT
Thursday, January 28 at 7:00 PM
Depending on your background, the term "power trio" may bring to mind the '60s sonic depth-charges launched by the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream; the twisty prog-rock styles of mid-'70s King Crimson and Rush; or the post-grunge bash of Seether and Wolfmother. In the case of Civil Twilight, as evidenced on their self-titled debut album, the term means all of that - and much more.
"We like to write together, and jam for hours at a time," says singer/bassist/pianist Steven McKellar, who joined his brother Andrew (guitar) and childhood friend Richard Wouters (drums) to form the group in 1996. "We'll play together in a studio, record all our jam sessions, and then listen back to them and pick the sections to work on that we think could turn into songs." $12

TOSHI REAGON: 25TH ANNIVERSARY BIRTHDAY CONCERTS
Thursday, January 28 - Saturday, January 30 at 9:00 PM w/ Big Lovely
Sunday January 31 at 7:00 PM Sacred Music Show w/ Special Guest Bernice Johnson Reagon
"Oh, that voice...devotees know they've born witness to one of the great voices of this generation." - Village Voice
The 25th anniversary of singer Toshi Reagon's annual birthday celebration, with shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with her band Big Lovely and a Sunday Sacred Music show that's not to be missed is an NYC tradition filled with genre-shattering musical highlights. Toshi's amazing band includes some of New York's finest musicians, Judith Casselberry, Fred Cash, Catherine Russell , Adam Widoff, and Robert Burke, collectively known as Big Lovely. The event promises extra-special surprise guest appearances from her many friends and collaborators, plus gifts from Toshi for her fans. Sunday evening continues the birthday celebration with an evening of sacred music sung by Toshi Reagon & Big Lovely with special Guest Bernice Johnson Reagon.
Toshi calls to mind classic R&B artists, like Stevie Wonder or Prince, and old school rock groups like Led Zeppelin; she can take any style, update it, and make it her own with incredible ease. Despite (or because of) her genre-bending, Toshi fits comfortably on a stage with any of the Lilith artists, at Carnegie Hall, or in a dirty rock club. Of her innovative rock crossed with soul-influenced, blues-tinged folk, Interview magazine raved, "Anyone who thinks rock is a dead medium need only listen to the music of Toshi Reagon and her almighty band Big Lovely." Most people would just tell you that to truly understand how Toshi can seamlessly transcend all of these genres; you have to check her out live. $25

EVAN DANDO
Saturday, January 30 at 7:00 PM
Lemonheads frontman Evan Dando's solo album, Baby I'm Bored (Bar-None), is an eclectic and affecting collection of songs ranging from bittersweet country rock to pure pop pleasure, dashed with a little indie-rock noise. His songs mix open-heartedness and good humor with a tantalizing diffidence and a certain element of mystery. Like a slightly blurred photograph of someoNe You really want to look at, Evan's work draws you in with the promise of confidences to be offered, late-night escapades to be recounted, jokes to be shared. You may never really get to know him, but you're not going to stop trying. $15
