On January 11, 2017, the City Opera Thrift Shop will host the Art Event, with paintings, prints, sculpture, art books from the shop's collection for sale. For the first time ever, City Opera is collaborating with the Self Portrait Project for Art Event. The Self Portrait Project will install its one-of-a-kind, two-way mirror photo booth at the City Opera Thrift Shop for customers to take their own portraits and contribute to the Project's collection.

For thirty-five years, the City Opera Thrift Shop has been an important fundraising initiative for New York City Opera. City Opera Thrift Shop's Art Event is the ideal place to snag a unique and unusual conversation piece from the shop's coveted collection of art objects, prints, paintings, rare posters, art books, and more, all while supporting New York City Opera. Guests will be encouraged to peruse the Thrift Shop's extensive library of coffee table books and art books.

This year, City Opera is partnering with The Self Portrait Project to enable guests to make their own art. Created in 2009, the Self Portrait Project is both a social experiment and an archive project that "seeks to capture the zeitgeist of New York City" by encouraging people to take self-portraits in a unique photo booth that is equipped with a two-way mirror. By letting people document themselves on their own terms, the Self Portrait Project addresses issues of insecurity and empowerment by letting participants be the model and the photographer.

City Opera Thrift Shop's Art Event featuring the Self Portrait Project Photo Booth will take place on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 from 6:00PM - 8:00PM at the City Opera Thrift Shop at 222 East 23rd Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues.

The second part of New York City Opera's 2016 - 2017 season is currently in progress with a critically acclaimed new production of Leonard Bernstein's comic operetta Candide directed by the legendary Harold Prince; performances continue through January 15. Next up is a Valentine's Day Concert on February 14 followed by Respighi's La campana sommersa (March 31 - April 5) and the American premiere of Antonio de Litere's Los Elementos (May 4 - 7). The season concludes with the New York premiere of Péter Eötvös's Angels in America, based on Tony Kushner's Pulitzer Prize-winning play (June 10 - 16).
