Center Stage Theatre Company is pleased to announce it had been awarded the Community Theatre Division of the prestigious Moss Hart Award from the New England Theatre Conference for its production of Chocolate Soup, which is being presented as part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival on September 21 at 3:30PM & 6PM at The Zipper Theatre.
Often referred to as the "New England Tony Award," the annu
Al Moss Hart Memorial Award has a two-fold purpose: to honor the memory of
Moss Hart, dramatist and director, for his wit and sensitivity, for his unconquerable enthusiasm for life and for his work in the theatre; and to recognize and encourage outstanding theatrical productions throughout New England of playscripts that present affirmative views of human courage and dignity, that have strong literary and artistic merit, and which in their productions, exemplify fresh, imaginative, creative treatment within the intent of the playwright.
Written and produced by
Jill Jaysen with music and lyrics by Matt Corriel, Chocolate Soup is a modern day fairytale with all the right ingredients in place – from clever, comedy-laced dialogue and a delightful musical score to the masterfully woven mix of thought provoking messages about life, choices and kids' ability to make a difference in the world. The plot centers on Mia's ancient family recipe for an Aztec chocolate soup, the popular kids (Excessives) who scheme to alter it just to make it more extreme, the not-as-popular Extras who channel their desire for acceptance into saving the polar bears, and the hero Justin - Mia's self confident new neighbor who shakes up everyone's ideas about what really matters.
"Everyone parent or teacher who has middle school aged children should come see Chocolate Soup," says Jaysen. "It truly speak to their time, and it's a wonderful way to connect with them on issues that matter to them most."
The Zipper Theatre is located at 336 West 37th Street. Performances are September 21 at 3:30PM & 6PM. Tickets are $20 and available at
