DOUBT, the most awarded play on Broadway, will launch a 24-city national tour in September, 2006. In a rare event for a national tour, Cherry Jones, who won a Tony Award for her performance as Sister Aloysius, will recreate her role for the first six months of the tour.
DOUBT, by John Patrick Shanley, is the winner of the 2005 Tony Award for Best Play, and the 2005 Pulitzer Prize, as well as the New York Drama Critics Circle Award, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Drama League, Lortel and Obie Awards as Best Play. The Broadway production is playing at the Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48th Street), where it will soon celebrate its first anniversary.
Cherry Jones was hailed as "Extraordinary" by Ben Brantley, New York Times. Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune, said of her performance in DOUBT, "Cherry Jones reminds audiences why Cherry Jones is Cherry Jones, which is an American actress for the ages."
The national tour will be directed by Doug Hughes, who won the 2005 Tony Award for Best Director for the Broadway production.
The producers commented, "We're delighted to bring Mr. Shanley's thought-provoking and riveting play to the rest of the country, and we're thrilled that more audiences will get the chance to see Cherry Jones recreate her indelible performance as Sister Aloysius."
Set against the backdrop of a Bronx Catholic school in 1964, DOUBT is the story of a strong-minded woman faced with a difficult decision. Should she voice concerns about one of her male colleagues…even if she's not entirely certain of the truth?
Set design is by John Lee Beatty, costume design is by Catherine Zuber, lighting design is by Pat Collins, original music and sound design is by David Van Tieghem.
DOUBT is produced by Carole Shorenstein Hays, MTC Productions Inc. (Lynne Meadow, Artistic Director; Barry Grove, Executive Producer), Roger Berlind and Scott Rudin.
Additional casting will be announced shortly. The tour is being booked by The Road Company.
