Chen Dance Center presents newsteps, its semi-annual emerging choreographer's series, May 11-13 at 7:30 PM. Since 1994, its theater has supported and presented hundreds of young dancers and choreographers developing innovative new works through space and production grants. At Chen Dance Center, 70 Mulberry Street (corner of Mulberry and Bayard in NYC's Chinatown).

Seven choreographers were selected for the May 11-13 concerts: Joshua Dunn, Molly Mingey, Deborah Gladstein with Helen Yee, Quinn Dixon & Bree Nasby, Ryan Pliss, Mary Grace McNally. Chosen through an open audition by a panel of dance leaders, each young choreographer receives a small stipend, free rehearsal space and three public performances at the Chen Dance Center.

"private parts" by Quinn Dixon & Bree Nasby make private parts public, sharing weakness and joy;

Ryan Pliss will collaborate with a cinematographer to investigate how we can learn to understand our own personal identity through our relationship to others;
In Joshua Dunn's "The 1 Percent" we watch a central character's internal and external interactions with herself and those around her, questioning ideas of trust, success, and sexual exploration.

Deborah Gladstein collaborates with musician Helen Yee in a work that combines movement and sound to cultivate awareness of breath, heightened sense perception, and exercising imagination.

Mary Grace McNally delves into the complicated development of womanhood, exploring how society's powerful imaging of women can manifest in the body

TRAVEL Subway: Take the 6, N, R, Q, J, Z to Canal Street, then walk East along Canal towards Chinatown. Turn right on to Mulberry Street then one block south to Bayard. The theater is on the northeast corner of Mulberry and Bayard, 2nd floor.

ABOUT CHEN DANCE CENTER With its renovated artist spaces and cultural information hub, Chen Dance Center (CDC) provides a refreshed and intimate black box performance space. CDC was created in 1988 with the mission to promote understanding through the arts, provide professional opportunities for artists, increase participation in the arts and develop future audiences. As a co-presenter of independent artists and presenter of the dance series newsteps, CDC supports the development of dance artists by providing a professional theater space in which artists of high caliber receive visibility to the dance community and press. CDC serves as a home base for local and visiting artists to develop and showcase their work and proudly celebrates the distinction of being the first professional performance space in New York City's Chinatown. CDC also hosts H.T. Chen & Dancers' annual educational series for children, provides affordable rehearsal space for modern dance artists, and serves as a venue for community events.
