Chelsea Symphony to Present FLIGHT PATHS Concert at The DiMenna Center This Fall

The Chelsea Symphony has announced the second concert series of its eleventh season, "Flight Paths," to take place on Friday, October 21 at 8:00 PM and Saturday, October 22 at 8:00 PM at The DiMenna Center for Classical Music, 450 West 37th Street, New York, NY. The concert series will offer Gustav Mahler's epic Fourth Symphony and the U.S. premiere of young Greek-American composer Athena Adamopoulos's work, Passage, which deals with the Syrian refugee crisis.

Adamopoulos is from the island of Lesvos, the Greek island closest to the Turkish border and home to a large number of Syrian refugee camps. Passage explores the complexities of the refugee crisis, focusing less on the politics and more on the human impact - Adamapoulos says: "as musicians, we are relegated to a different form of expression...The story of every human being's existence in this type of context is poetry itself."

Both concerts will also include Mahler's towering Fourth Symphony, featuring soprano Cree Carrico, praised for her "gleaming tone," by Opera News. Additionally, the October 21 performance will exclusively present Debussy's Première Rhapsodie with Christine Todd on clarinet, while the October 22 concert will present Françaix's L'Horloge de Flore with soloist Emily DiAngelo on oboe. TCS Artistic Directors Matthew Aubin and Mark Seto conduct.

The Chelsea Symphony, hailed as an "enterprising group of young musicians" by Time Out, upends the traditional hierarchy of the classical orchestra: members rotate as featured soloists, conductors, and composers. The self-governing ensemble aims to be a cultural focus for Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood and to present vibrant concerts of inspiring symphonic music both old and new. In recent years, The Chelsea Symphony has expanded its reach with performances at Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, Bargemusic, the United Palace Theatre, New York Fashion Week, the DiMenna Center, and Merkin Concert Hall. In December 2014, The Chelsea Symphony performed at Alice Tully Hall for the premiere of the Amazon Original Series Mozart in the Jungle.
