Center for Contemporary Opera, led by General Director James E. Schaeffer, presents the world premiere of Michael Dellaira and JD McClatchy's The Secret Agent, Friday, March 18 and Saturday, March 19 at The Danny Kaye Playhouse. The cast features Metropolitan Opera veteran Amy Burton as Winnie and Scott Bearden as Verloc. The performance will be directed by Sam Helfrich. Emmy-nominated conductor Sara Jobin, will conduct the Center for Contemporary Opera Orchestra.
Based on Joseph Conrad's novel, The Secret Agent is a story of social tragedy and intimate human drama taking place in late 19th century London. It chronicles a stirring tale of political intrigue among anarchists and government officials, murder and suicide. A bomb has exploded at the Greenwich Observatory - an attack "having all the shocking senselessness of gratuitous blasphemy," as Conrad writes. Chief Inspector Heat's investigation leads to Adolf Verloc, a foreign provocateur and his cell of terrorists. But the bomber turns out to be a mere boy: Verloc's wife's beloved brother, out on a mission he could not have understood. On joint commission from The Center for Contemporary Opera, San Antonio Opera and Long Leaf Opera, Michael Dellaira and JD McClatchy have transformed this political mystery into a captivating opera.

CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY OPERA
Founded in 1982, the Center for Contemporary Opera (CCO) is dedicated to producing contemporary opera and nurturing innovative American composers, librettists, and performers. While almost every other opera company in the United States remains focused on a more Eurocentric tradition, CCO is uniquely committed to fostering an American tradition of opera and music-theater.
The Center has presented over 70 works in readings, workshops, and full productions, including 19 world premieres. These include operas by such luminaries as Dominick Argento, Seymour Barab, Carlisle Floyd, Ned Rorem, Eric Salzman, and Conrad Susa to name only a few. This past season (2009-2010) was the most ambitious yet, with highly successful tour of Latvia and presentations of seven operas and music-theater works including the world premiere of John Eaton's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at Symphony Space. The company released its fourth commercial recording, Alice in Wonderland as well as assumed publication of New Music Connoisseur, the only magazine devoted to contemporary music. Next fall, CCO will take its production of The Secret Agent to Hungary and France where it will also be broadcast live across Europe via the Mezzo
network.
Jim Schaeffer, CCO General Director is an active performing musician and arts management expert, who formerly served as the director of Long Leaf Opera in Chapel Hill, NC. Since his arrival in 2008, CCO has presented over twenty operas, performed in Europe on two occasions and released a commercial recording. He has also launched a major initiative, the CCO Development Series, which affords composers and librettists the opportunity to hear their works performed professionally for the first time, serving a similar purpose as previews for the dramatic stage. A conductor and composer, Schaeffer was principal bassoonist with several orchestras throughout the U.S. and Europe and his compositions have been performed at the American Dance Festival
among other venues.
