The Cell Theatre presents SOLO @ the cell, a special solo performance series playing right in the heart of Chelsea for the month of October. Under the direction of Founding Artistic Director Nancy Manocherian and Artistic Director Kira Simring, the cell celebrates the works of nine different NYC solo artists, all with varying backgrounds, featuring both original pieces and unique adaptations.
SOLO @ the cell (338 W. 23rd Street) plays Friday, October 1 through Thursday October 21, 2010. All evening performances are at 8:00PM, with weekend matinees at 2:00PM. THE CONFESSIONS OF A DOC HOLLIDAY
Adapted and performed by Darrell Larson and directed by Kira Simring - Friday, October 1 and Saturday, October 2 at 8 PM.The last moments in the storied life of John Henry 'Doc' Holliday, western icon and friend of Wyatt Earp, as he struggles to complete a summative letter to his favorite relative, a cousin who has become a nun. Asking her to consider the letter a confession, he gives his considered, professional and eloquent opinions on drinking, gambling, killing, poetry, history, truth and dying every day. Loosely based on the novel 'Bucking the Tiger' by Bruce Olds.
ABC... L'ITALIANO SI IMPARA COSI' (HOW TO LEARN ITALIAN IN ONE HOUR)
Written, directed and performed by Laura Caparrotti, with a sketch written by Uberto Kovacevich - Tuesday, October 5 at 8 PM. School cannot start without the great PROFESSOR MARGHERITA!! A very unique method used by Miss Margherita, a despotic Teacher/Diva, to teach Italian to any Italian student in just one hour. Starting from what is more well-known in the US about Italy - Love, Food, Literature, Art, Tourism and Music - Miss Margherita will explain and teach the Italian language, culture, art and tradition to the audience. A funny and educational performance good for any audience!
...and then you go on: An anthology of the Works of Samuel Beckett
Adapted and Performed by Bob Jaffe. Directed by Peter Wallace -- Wednesday October 6 at 8 PM. Draws from 13 of Samuel Beckett's works, spanning 44 years (1936 - 1980). Jaffe portrays a single, composite character in this "tour de force solo performance piece" (CurtainUp.com), a character who finds hope and connection in the face of despair. The New York Times called the production "a lionizing tribute to this great Irish writer, and it is inarguably a deserving one."
JUST DON'T TOUCH ME AMIGO
Written and performed by Fernando Gambaroni, and directed by Jose Zayas - Thursday October 7 at 8 PM. A one-man show written and performed by Fernando Gambaroni. A comedy about a guy who just doesn't get that his loneliness is such a turn-off. It's also a comedy about loneliness shown from different perspectives, from locals who tend to believe that foreigners don't have a right to criticize, to newcomers who have trouble understanding their new reality within its own context.
BAD CONNECTIONS?
A new play written by Michael Levesque, directed by Thom Fogarty and performed by Paul Cosentino - Friday and Saturday October 8 and 9 at 8 PM. BAD CONNECTIONS? follows the lives of nine eccentric and delightful New Yorkers making their way through a rainy Manhattan day as they face tragedy, loss, pain, hope, understanding, and forgiveness ... and how they might be getting it all wrong - or maybe not!
SECOND HAND ROSE
Written and performed by Rose and directed by Diana Basmajian - October 9 at 2 PM. A rare first glimpse into the life of Rose, a woman who never should have marriEd Simon. Told through the eyes and, of more importantly, body of her son. Rose tells the world about her terrible life and her biggest mistake, marrying Simon.
THE ADVENTURES OF A SLOEVNIAN IN NEW YORK
Written and performed by Tjasa Ferma and directed by Diana Basmajian - Sunday, October 17 at 2 PM. Where is Slovenia? Who are Slovenians? And why, with its picturesque medieval castles and landscape, did a young woman with a budding film career move to New York City? 10 things you've always wanted to know about Slovenia and Slovenians told through the poignant and funny blunders of an actress who came to New York probably through the iron curtain. Wait, where is Slovenia again?
WARRIORS DON'T CRY
Written by Melba Pattillo Beals, adapted by Zita Christian & Scott Galbraith, and directed by Richard C. Aven - performed by Almeria Campbell - Wednesday, October 20 at 8 PM. The Little Rock Nine were terrorized daily as they sought to integrate Central High School in 1957. Melba Pattillo's journey to "get a better education and be seen as equal to white people" turned her from an ordinary teenage girl into an unsuspecting warrior.
SILVIE JENSEN
Thursday, October 21 at 8 PM - an evening of beautiful chamber music and songs presented by Silvie Jensen, vocalist, with piano, guitar, flute, and clarinet. Schoenberg, Britten, Corigliano and more. A vocalist of great versatility, Silvie Jensen enjoys a wide-ranging career, which includes early and contemporary music, opera and musical theater, and ethnic, improvised, and experimental music. In a re-imagining of the typical song recital, she will present a show that explores both traditional song repertoire and vocal chamber music. This show will feature songs by Britten, Feldman, Corigliano, Yarmolinsky, and will trace Arnold Schoenberg's journey from romantic classicist to avant-garde modernist. Musicians will include Joao Luiz Rezende Lopes of Brasil Guitar Duo, Djordje Nesic, and Bohdan Hilash.
