Celebrate American Innovation at Brooklyn Museum's Target First Saturday Today

Today, July 6, Target First Saturday celebrates American innovation and the diversity that defines American culture. Target First Saturday events attract thousands of visitors to free art and entertainment programs each month. July highlights include:

5-10 p.m. Music Showcase: An evening tracing American music from blues to hip-hop. Michael Hill's Blues Mob kicks off at 5 p.m. with blues flavored with rock, R&B, and funk. At7 p.m., Frankie Rose performs dream-pop melodies from classic eighties rock. At 9 p.m., hip-hop group Brown Bag All Stars lays down fresh beats influenced by 1990s East Coast rap.

5:30 p.m. Music: Hungry March Band, Brooklyn's street brass band, hosts a melting pot of influences ranging from New Orleans street bands to Indian wedding brass.

6-9 p.m. Pop-up Gallery Talks: Short, lively conversations relating art in the Museum's collection to current events.

6 p.m. Performance: The Redhawk Native American Arts Council hosts an interactive dance performance inspired by traditional Native American dances.

7 p.m. Artist Talk: Valerie Hegarty discusses her installation Alternative Histories, encouraging visitors to rethink American History.

6-8 p.m. Participatory Program: Create a flag or banner inspired by your personal history, life experiences, or cultural background.

8 p.m. Film Shorts: StoryCorps' animated shorts, illustrated by Michael and Timothy Rauch, feature funny, poignant, and memorable stories as told by Americans who lived them. Presented in partnership with the PBS documentary series POV.

Throughout the evening, a cash bar will offer beer and wine, and the Museum Café will serve a wide variety of sandwiches, salads, and beverages. The Museum Shop will remain open until 11 p.m.

Museum admission is free from 5 to 11 p.m. and includes entrance to all galleries and events. Programs subject to change without notice. Some Target First Saturdayprograms have limited space and are ticketed on a first-come, first-served basis. Lines for free tickets often form thirty minutes in advance.
